The Sivagiri Mutt was devoted to Sree Narayana, who was the key player of a social revolution of Kerala, which changed the caste-ridden society of Kerala. He worked very hard for betterment of the Kerala society. He fought for his own philosophies like ‘one-caste, one religion’ and ‘one God for man’. He fought against the caste domination as well as untouchability and religious fanaticism practiced by them.

Sivagiri Mutt

The Sivagiri Mutt is situated on the top of the Varkala Hill, next to the Sharada temple. Visitors pack the Mutt on Guru Deva Jayanti, the birthday of the Guru and on the Samadhi Day (the day of Funeral), which are celebrated in August and September. On this day various functions, processions, shows, community feasts and various rituals are held.

At the end of December, Sree Narayana’s devotees’ stream to Sivagiri wearing yellow attire from various parts of Kerala and outside, which is called pilgrimage of enlightenment. In this Kerala festival various theme based seminars and discussions related to modern life are held that range from industrialisation to women’s emancipation. Sree Narayana’s Mahasamadhi is also an attractive place as number of tourists and devotees visit regularly on their tour to Kerala.
